07469. Canada Plains of Abraham 184007469. Canada Plains of Abraham 1840

Canada W.H.Bartlett/R.Wallis Published in England The Plains of Abraham, near Quebec (The spot where General Wolfe fell) Original historical print published c1840. Military interest with soldiers in military uniform in the foreground. Very lightly soiled very good condition with wide margins. 279mm x 212mm.

NOTE: General James Wolfe (1727 - 1759) was born in Westerham, Kent,. He entered the army at the age of 14 and proved himself a brilliant soldier. In 1758 he was dispatched by William Pitt (the elder) to Canada to capture the City of Quebec. On the night of 12th September 1759, Wolfe landed 5000 men across the river west of Quebec, and under the cover of darkness they scaled the steep cliffs, known as the 'heights of Abraham'. To ensure the element of surprise, Wolfe had ordered that his men remove their shoes and boots before the climb, and they reached the cliff-top without the French defenders even being aware of their presence. On the following day, during the battle that followed, Wolfe, aged just 32, was wounded three times and died at the peak of the battle.
