4979. Bank of England Sampson 1740
Anon
A Perspective View of the Bank of England
c1740. Copper print engraving with late colour of the Bank building by the architect George Sampson completed 1732-34 (rebuilt in 1765 by Sir Robert Taylor). This was the first purpose-built bank in the British Isles. Large attractive print in excellent condition. 253mm x 410mm.
NOTE: There is a lack of records of the Bank building during this period. Even George Sampson's dates are certain. Sampson was Clerk of Works at the Tower of London and Somerset House and later became Surveyor to the Bank. The Bank of England building is the only architectural attribution to Sampson who died in 1764.
