05612. Anon - Don-Key Lord Mayor 183005612. Anon - Don-Key Lord Mayor 1830

Anon The Don-Key Turned Mayor Or An Ass In The Chair c1830. A donkey with a human face in an Alderman's cloak sits at a table with his feet on a footstool, facing the head & forelegs of a horse. This is probably The Lord Mayor of the City of London, John Key, who served two years in 1830 and 1831, and was frequently characterised as a donkey in a series of caricatures. The horse on the table may well represent King William the IV who came to the throne in 1830 or possibly The Duke of Wellington, Prime Minister at the time. Lord Mayor Key, famously, cancelled a Civic City Diner because of fears of rioting and this caricature appears to be referring to that particular incident for fear of rioting.
