NOTE: The Edinburgh Courant, one of the country's first regional papers, began circulation in February 1705 in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland as a 1 penny broadsheet newspaper twice weekly until 1710. From 1710 until 1720 it was published as the Scots Courant and as the Edinburgh Evening Courant until 1873, when the Evening News saw the light of day. The author Daniel Defoe and the naval historian James Hannay were Editors, in the early 18th century and between 1860 and1864, respectively.
