B P Grimaud "Jeu Louis XV" 1890 Playing Cards complete 53 cards with extra card as published sealed in original box with contemporary tax stamp. Edge reads 53 Cartes No 1502. Highly attractive bright and colourful chromo-litho printing of Court Kings and Ladies using metallic gold and gilt edges. In addition to this standard Bridge size original deck Patience size and a later facsimile have also been produced. The original deck had no joker although 53 cards are named on the box. A Joker was specially designed by Grimaud for the later facsimile deck. Mint sealed with wrapper and box. As published.

France Jeu des Rois de France 1668 book containing 4 decks of playing cards engraved by Stefano de la Bella. Published by Jean Desmarets of St Sorlin, member of the l'Académie Française. Educational playing cards devised by Cardinal Mazarin, in order to entertain, whilst educating the young Louis XIV. First published 1644. The four packs are "Cartes des Rois de France" - Kings of France; "Jeu des Reynes renommées", Queens of France Recalled; "Jeu de la Géographie" Geographical Playing Cards and "Jeu des Fables" Mythological or Fables Game all of which are dedicated to the Young Regent King for the Instruction of his Majesty. Overall very good condition. Title page has contemporaneous repair not affecting the original text. General light foxing, gilt edges, a few of the last pages lightly soiled.
