Hogarth, William (1697 - 1764) The Industrious' Prentice Lord Mayor of London Published according to Act of Parliament September 30, 1747. This full size edition published by William Heath 1822. The scene depicted is a chaotic Lord Mayor's show. The newly elected Lord Mayor of London Sir Robert Ladbroke is in his coach leading the procession. Behind are the Livery Companies waving their banners Crowds of spectators are cheering as the Prince of Wales and his entourage in the balcony on the top right, observe the proceedings. The unruly crowd are cheering and having a good time, drinking and love making. A comic group of city militia on the right, one discharging his gun, are inactive. The title of the series of these prints is hinted at in the broadsheet held by the little boy stating: "A full and true Account of ye Ghost of Tho. Idle". Francis Goodchild and Thomas Idle are the two apprentices illustrating the 12 print series Industry and Idleness. Original steele engraved excellent strong print in pristine condition. 600mm x 467mm.
