'The Freemasons' Charity Children Being Presented To The Trustees And Governors On Their Anniversary At Freemasons' Hall'. Copper engraved print, taken from the original painting by Brother Stothard RA (1755-1834) and engraved by Brother Francesco Bartolozzi RA (1727-1815). First Edition published by William Jeffrys London 1st June 1802. This is one of the best-known Masonic prints depicting Chevalier Bartholomew Ruspini (1728-1813), founder of the Girls' Institution, holding two young girls by their hands and leading the procession through a throng of well known Masons and dignitaries. In the foreground on the left is H R H the Prince of Wales, Grand Master of the Premier Grand Lodge at the time. With him are the Earl of Moira, Assistant Grand Master and other Masonic dignitaries. To their left, the Ottoman Ambassador to England Ussuf Aguiah Efendi, is standing amongst his own entourage. Opposite them are a group which inlude the Lord Mayor of London Sir John Eamer and, standing against the wall, and wearing a hair band, General William Augustus Bowles (1763-1805) Cherokee Chief who was commissioned with the British Army in America. Bowles was initiated in England and an Honorary Member of the Prince of Wales Lodge (1791). He was appointed by District Grand Master to the Creek, Cherokee Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians. Among the many other identified individuals are James Heseltine, James Galloway, HRH The Duke of York, Lord Randiffe, Mr Harper &c. Subsequent editions of this print were re-produced on many occasions most notably by Thomas Rowlandson (1746-1827) and Augustus Pugin (1762-1832). This first edition is a large print with damage to the lower margin not affecting the printed surface. Lightly soiled and visible tears to margins only. Body of print in excellent condition. Rare and desirable. 693mm x 567mm
