04379. Dreyfus/Picquart Affair 30 January 1898
France newspaper Le Petit Journal Supplément Illustré 30 January 1898 8 pages 3 prints back cover illustration titled Arrestation du lieutenant-colonel Picquart illustration drawn by F. Meavile. Marie Georges Picquart (1854-1914), was the French army officer (who later became Minister of War) best known for his role in exposing the truth in the Dreyfus Affair in 1896. He discovered that the memorandum that convicted Captain Alfred Dreyfus had been forged. In spite of warnings by high ranking generals Picquart persisted with his investigation until he was arrested for forgery. He resigned from the army and was exonerated with Alfred Dreyfus in 1906. On the cover an additional colourful litho print titled Vive L'Armee!!! Le General Jamont and Le General Zurlinden. Lightly soiled some damage to margin therwise very good condition. 310mm x 440mm

France newspaper Le Petit Journal Supplement Illustre 7 August 1898. 8 pages of text 3 prints. Cover illustration captioned Affaire Zola La signification de l'arret. The significance of the arrest of Émile Zola. Colourful litho illustration by Tofani depicting formal handing of arrest warrant. Émile Zola (1840-1902), the influential French novelist and a major figure in the political liberalization of France, risked his career when in January 1898 hepublished "J'accuse" as an open letter accusing the government of anti-Semitism and of wrongfully placing the Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus in jail. Other full colour illustration on iside page headed Chiens de Chasse by Malher depicting 8 windows with named hunting dogs. Back page macabre deatiled depiction titled Naufrage de "La Bourgogne".- Les cadavres a l'ile de Sable. Showing the drowned bodies of the passengers that did not survive the disaster. 04380. Dreyfus/Zola Appeal 17 April 1898
France newspaper Le Petit Journal Supplément Illustré 17 April 1898 8 pages 3 prints cover illustration titled Affaire Zola La Cour de cassation illustration drawn by F. Meavile. The Court of Appeal depicting Judges and Lawyers in their full regalia three identified as M Loew the President; M Manau the Prosecutor General and M Chambareaud Court Reporter. In June 1899 Zola was convicted of criminal libel and removed from the Legion of Honor. He fled to England and returned to France in 1900. in time to see the government fall. He died in Paris on 29 September 1902 from carbon monoxide poisoning and although his various enemies were blamed for his death nothing was ever proved. He was 62 years old. Other pages show colour plates titled La Foire aux Jambons and L'armee des Etats-Unis - Les Affaires de Cuba by the artist Meyer. 310mm x 440mm.Excellent condition.

Hogarth, William <<em>>!!An Emblematical Print on the South Sea (430mm x 320mm) with additional prints : The Laughing Audience (210mm x 235mm)and Rehersal of the Oratorio of Judith (210mm x 235mm).. The whole copper engraved plate (430mm x 550mm) dated August 1st 1800. Prints of the original painting by William Hogarth. South Sea depicts a chaotic scene by the monument in the City of London. Riders on the wheel of fortune. A group of three Jews on the left foreground represent 'self interest'. Text at base of the monument refers to 1720 South Sea Bubble. This three in one print dated full size edition is engraved by T Cook and published by G. G. & J. Robinson. Last of the 18th century large full size Hogarth prints. Some light foxing and usual soiling with some repairs on margins not affecting printed surface. Generally very good condition. Click here for larger image
